Three
elements are often associated with display: a tree, an accent
item, and a scroll (rarely used in an exhibition). Each of
these can play a role in the creation of a landscape, although
they do not comprise the picture. We are really exhibiting
an area of three-dimensional space; the components simply
frame this space and hint at the contents. The scene will
be in the mind of the viewer, and since each viewer has different
experiences, the scene they see will be unique to them. If
the viewer is perceptive enough, we are creating more than
a picture – it is a landscape for their mind to enter and
wander through!
If
a tree is inspiring enough to conjure an entire panorama,
it may be used alone. If it is felt necessary to give more
clues to the environment, then an accent item of some kind
may be used. If more information is required a scroll could
be introduced, but this is art, and cannot be dictated by
rules – these are formulae that have been shown to work, but
at best they are only guidelines, there to be ignored if creativity
desires.
